Are YOU thirsty?

Did you know that water is the largest single component of the human body? Although the exact percentage of water that comprises a human being varies, it is generally accepted that up to 60% of the adult human body consists of water. Current medical advice suggests that young adult men and women should drink about 3.5 litres and 2.7 liters of fluids (water and other beverages), respectively, every day. These daily fluid requirements will increase further with sustained body activity and elevated temperatures. It is clear, physically speaking, that we need water every day to function properly.

But there is a thirst inside each one of us that cannot be satisfied by just water. It is a different type of thirst. This thirst is for purpose, true fulfillment, loving relationships with other people and meaningful answers to life’s difficult situations. We thirst for solid answers to questions like: Are we here just by chance? Did God create everything? Can I have a relationship with my Creator?

In the Bible, Jesus Christ is recorded as saying: “But whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.” (John 4:14) Now that sounds like good water! Of course, Jesus was not simply talking about fresh water from our taps and lakes. He was teaching that whoever calls on the name of the LORD to be saved can enter into an eternal and increasingly meaningful relationship with Him. This type of relationship with our Creator will quench our thirst for all the competing and unhealthy distractions in our society. Let’s face it---a new job, a pay raise, a new home or a new romantic relationship will all lose their appeal over time if we think that they will satisfy our deepest desires and thirsts.
